This must qualify as the most mis-played lick in the dino rock arsenal. The two sticky points are how you get that nice trill after the highest note in the lick, and how you walk down into the A.
To get it right, without a lot of position shifting that makes the trill sound lame, play the highest note (E) on the B string, 5th fret. There’s a 6-7 slur on the G string just before that note, and the trill itself is a 5-7-5 pulloff on the G string. The whole lick (except the notes mentioned in the nest paragraph is played with your index finger resting on the 5th fret, across the D G and B strings. It should feel loose and relaxed that way.
To get the walkdown right, remember that you don’t actually ever take a position on the 3rd fret. You go straight from an A on the 7th fret of the D string to the open D. That D, and the remaining 6 notes, are all in the open position, including the two crashing A chords at the end.
Rob,
Thank you for your excellent commentary. I’m sure it will be additionally helpful for the players on the site.
